Admissions Counselor & Student Support Associate
Rafaello ‘Rafa’ Sampang is an immigrant from the Philippines. He was raised in the DC-Maryland-Virginia tri-state area. In 2009 he was awarded the Posse Foundation Scholarship to attend Pepperdine University where he graduated in 2015. He earned a Philosophy degree with an emphasis on Political Science. The Posse Foundation is a nationally recognized program that Barack Obama endorsed using the Nobel Peace Prize money he was awarded in 2009.
While at Pepperdine, he spent his time working as an intern for the Intercultural Affairs office, a financial council member of the InterClub Council and served 2 years on the Executive Board of Student Government as VP of Finance and Student Body President. Before leaving, he advocated for a student initiative that urged strongly for cultural sensitivity training for all staff and faculty in order to provide a better and more inclusive education for the growing diversity at Pepperdine.
He has spent the past year working in the LAUSD school system as an AmeriCorps member apart of City Year LA, a non-profit organization geared towards closing the academic gap. Rafa helped developed and nurture middle school 7th grader’s academic and socioemotional skills at Carver Middle School. He helped manage a robust afterschool program that aimed at providing a safe extended learning space for the school.
Rafa enjoys playing/singing with his guitar and his hobbies include sports, video games, science, movies, and Japanese culture.
